Situated at the southernmost end of Tohoku, Fukushima is a fertile area with lush forests and tall mountains. Fukushima marked the ancient gateway to the untamed northern regions and, during the Asuka period, great barriers were erected to keep the northern tribesmen from encroaching upon the civilised people to the south.
