Situated on the Tokai coast, Mikawa is a moderately wealthy area, and the ancestral fief of the Matsudaira clan. Matsudaira Takechiyo would later adopt the name Tokugawa Ieyasu and rise to become Seii Taishogun, the "great commander who subdues barbarians". The Tokugawa clan ruled as Shoguns for more than 200 years. Today, Mikawa is famed for the production of fireworks, a result of an order from the Tokugawa Shogunate that the province should be the sole source of gunpowder in Japan.
