Located in the centre of the "Japanese Alps", the Shinano province is as mountainous as might be expected. It is therefore difficult to farm. In all of Japan, it is the province furthest from the sea in all directions. Stone is extensively quarried. Today, Shinano province is better known as Nagano prefecture, the host area of the 1998 Winter Olympic Games.
