Introduction
Naval battles work in exactly the same way as land battles: the battlefield is a seascape, individual ships replace units, and combat is controlled using essentially the same user interface as when fighting on land. During the period of history covered by Total War: Shogun 2 and the Rise of the Samurai campaign, fighting at sea consisted of firing arrows and then getting in close to board and melee. During the Boshin War, featured in the Fall of the Samurai campaign, artillery took centre stage, torpedoes had been developed and ramming (with the advent of ironclad hulls) was a viable battle tactic.
