Higo is situated on the west coast of Kyushu. Its fertile soil and mild climate makes it an agriculturally rich province. An impressive and well-constructed castle was built in the provincial capital of Kumamoto during the late sixteenth century. It was supposed to be impregnable, but it finally fell to an attack during the Satsuma Rebellion of 1877, although many of its buildings survived.
