Iwate is located in the north-easternmost part of Japan, and has an ample annual rice yield despite the generally cold and inhospitable climate. Remote and sparsely populated, it was still home to indigenous tribes until the end of the Nara period in around 800 AD, when the Japanese began their occupation and subjugation of the area.
