Description
French engineering and style, all in one place.
A French trading district improves the port defences in several ways, and improves the value of exports to the outside world. The Second Opium War (1856-60) gave the Japanese a concrete example of what could happen if European powers, in this case Britain and France, decided to use force. China was forced to make extensive trade concessions by the war, including legalising the opium trade, granting "favoured nation" trading status to her attackers and opening up ports to effective European control. Quite sensibly, the Japanese wanted nothing like it to happen to them. During the years of the Opium War, the Japanese agreed to a series of treaties that, while unfair, were distinctly better than handing over complete control to foreigners.
